Dear parents and foundation students, here is the ArtSEL lesson for the week beginning 7/06/2021.
Handling Having Things Taken Away. No Homework
So we can reminded ourselves of the different calming down strategies and to always be polite to others, show manners at all times and be positive and assertive.
These lessons also:
-improve our emotional learning (Self-Regulation) by challenging our focus and persistence.
- enhance our fine motor skills.
- give us useful drawing skills that we can transfer into our future art learning.
Last week we learnt that when friends play in a fair way, they both have fun. Today we will talk about what to do when someone takes something away from you.
We need to remind ourselves of the different calming down strategies.
Belly breathing to calm down, and think clearly about how to solve problems.
We use the STEP strategy to solve problems.
SAY the problem.
Think of solutions.
Explore consequences.
Pick the best solution.
Let's listen to the S T E P song

PUPPETS
Brownie is upset because Slime took his ball away because it could have rolled into the street.
Today we’ll talk about what to do when someone takes something away from you.
Show the photo. Here are Parker and Owen. Owen was playing with the ball. Parker really wanted to play with it too. So when Owen dropped it, Parker ran and picked it up without asking. Owen is so angry, he can’t think what to do.
Owen is feeling very angry. What does he need to do? (Calm down right away.) Why does he need to calm down? (So he doesn’t hurt Parker’s body or feelings. So he can think clearly.)
Let’s all say how to calm down. (Go through the How to Calm Down Poster). Owen calms down, and now he can think clearly to solve the problem.
(Point to the Problem-Solving Steps Poster). Let’s all say the first Problem-Solving Step together: Say the problem. Think about how to say what the problem is. (Parker took the ball without asking. Owen wants the ball back.) Say the problem without using blaming words. The problem is that there is only one ball, and Owen and Parker both want it.
What is a fair way to play with the ball? Point to the Fair Ways to Play Poster. (Sharing, trading, taking turns.) Think about which idea you would pick.
Owen uses self-talk and thinks of some things to do. He picks talking assertively to Parker and suggesting they play together and share the ball.
Being assertive stops problems from getting worse. Stand up straight, look right at someone and be respectful, calm, firm.
This is what Owen says: “I didn’t like it when you took the ball without asking. Let’s share the ball and play together.” Parker says he really wanted to play with the ball and he is sorry for grabbing it. In the end, they both have more fun playing together.
Coping with having things taken away is very difficult for us and often brings on strong feelings. Always remember your calm down steps so you can think clearly.
ART
In art today we are going to draw animals using shapes.
Lets watch this video all the way to the end to get some ideas.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrG33P1lwdI
Think about which animals you would like to draw.
The pictures on the left-hand side can be copied (a cat or a scarecrow or from last weeks lesson, a giraffe, an owl, a fish, a dog or a whale.) You can make up your own animals using shapes.
You can also use google to look at pictures made of shapes and copy them.
What you will need to do:
You will need a ruler for your shapes.
When drawing your shapes, remember to:
Ensure your lines are straight
Check the lengths of the lines and the proportions of each shape.
Re-watch the youtube clip and pause for each step.
Now draw each shape with a grey-lead pencil.
Give yourself feedback on your artwork (What parts are you proud of and what parts could be improved?).
Give yourself feedforward (based on your feedback, how can you improve your artwork through refining it and/or adding more detail?)
After you have given yourself feedback and you are happy with your drawing, add colour (use coloured pencils).
Practice weighting the pencil to get different tones for colouring. Try to leave no white gaps and try to stay within the lines.
Try these.....

Enjoy your ArtSEL !!!!!!!
Dear parents and foundation students, here is the ArtSEL lesson for the week beginning 31/5/2021.
Fair Ways to Play.
Homework Included
All students need to share, trade, and take turns These are all fair and fun ways to enjoy ourselves.
Remember we are always polite to others, show manners at all times and are positive and assertive.
Sharing, trading, and taking turns are fair and fun ways to play. Sometimes it’s hard to share and take turns with things we love to play with. When we share, trade and take turns with our friends, it helps us to get along better with others.
Use the STEP strategy to solve problems.
SAY the problem.
Think of solutions.
Explore consequences.
Pick the best solution.
Sharing, trading, and taking turns are all fair ways to play. They also make it fun to play together.

ART
We are going to learn how to draw animals using shapes.
Internet- Watch the Youtube clip.
Grey Lead Pencil.
White A4 paper.
Coloured Pencils
Eraser.
Sharpener.
Lets get started
Watch the youtube clip.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS75KfuVigg
Now we are going to draw but we must draw really slowly.
Usually the slower you draw, the better your drawing!
We're going to practice how to draw shapes. You may want to use a ruler
Think about:
Are your lines straight?
Are the lengths of my lines correct?
Do my shapes look right?
Rewatch the youtube clip and pause for each drawing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS75KfuVigg
Now draw each shape with a grey-lead pencil. When you are happy with your shape, go over with a black marker.
Focus and go slowly over your grey-lead.
The slower you go, the more accurate you will be.
Once you are happy with your drawing, add colour (use coloured pencils).
Colour your square, triangle and rectangle in primary colours. Colour all other shapes in secondary colours.
Practice pressing your pencil hard or softly to get different tones for colouring. Try to leave no white gaps and try to stay within the lines. No scribbling please.
Have fun and hope to see you soon!!!
Remember to do your homework!!!
Please bring your drawings to school.
