Order! Order!
Duration: 4:51
Adapted from M Askew – A practical guide to transforming primary mathematics, 2016
Instructions:
Roll the dice to create a 2-digit number. Write it on one of the sticky notes.
Repeat until you have 4 numbers.
Order them from smallest to largest.
Hint! The challenge is to do this in the fewest (least) moves possible and only move cards that are next to each other.
Order them from largest to smallest.
Hint! Again, the challenge is to do this in the fewest moves possible and only move cards that are next to each other.
Order the numbers in the picture from largest to smallest.
Record how many moves it takes to order them
Hint! Remember, try to use the least number of moves possible!
For those who like a challenge!
Make bigger numbers by using more dice.
Use only a few playing cards to make more numbers. For example, use A, 1 and J (to represent 0) only. Does that increase the challenge of working out the order?
Turn over 3
Let's play a number game!
Instructions:
Shuffle the cards into a pile.
Place the pile face down between 2 players.
Take turns to turn over the top 3 cards.
Players look for doubles, near doubles, combinations to 10 and 20.
Players keep the cards of any known facts they identify and know, justifying their thinking to their partner who records it on the recording sheet.
Any unused cards are placed into a discard pile.
Players continue taking turns until the cards run out. When that happens, it is a reshuffle of all of the unused cards.
Re-distribute them into 3 piles and continue playing.
The winner is the player with the highest cumulative total at the end of 5 rounds.
Hint! Cumulative means to keep adding onto your previous total.
For those who like a challenge!
Other ways to play:
For subtraction, choose which cards to combine using known facts and then subtract the third card. Players are able to keep all 3 cards if they are able to identify a known fact and then subtract the third value, explaining their mental computation to the other player.
Play until the whole deck of cards is used.
Get creative!

Watch the video and join in the activity.
You will need:
pencils
your workbook
food colouring

Magical milk masterpieces
Duration: 6:34
Method:
Pour a thin layer of milk onto the tray or plate.
Add 1-2 drops of food colouring in different places on the tray or plate.
Use the cotton bud to add 1 drop of detergent onto the drop of colour.
Watch the artwork appear.
You may choose to add another drop to the other colours.
Steps 1 & 2
Step 3
Step 4
Observation:
Observe how the milk and detergent move around the tray or plate.
Optional:
What happens to the patterns if we use soy milk, almond milk, low fat milk or full cream milk?
Observe the colour patterns in these liquids and describe what you notice.
When you have created a masterpiece, record it on a device.
For those who like a challenge!
Investigate different ways to create your masterpiece.
Observe what happens when you change:
the amount of milk
the amount of food colouring
where you place the detergent (on the food colouring or near it).
Think about and explain any changes you may notice.
