Mathematics
You will need:
Bread boxes
Let's investigate 1 cubic metre!
You will need:
a measuring tool (e.g. a ruler or measuring tape)
grid paper
(PDF file, 90 KB)pencils.
Optional:
a loaf of bread (or use the measurements 10cm x 10cm base and 25cm height).
Let’s investigate how many loaves of bread can be packed into a box that measures 1 cubic metre. This will help the bread distributor organise their deliveries to supermarkets.
Note: the box is a cube and each edge is 1 metre. Remember, if you haven't got a loaf of bread, use the measurements 10cm x 10cm base and 25cm height.
Start by making a drawing of one layer of loaves of bread to find how many loaves can be arranged to fit an area of 1 square metre.
Use this information and the heights to calculate the number of layers.
