Let's investigate the properties of different types of paper when they get wet! This will help us to think about how to use and reuse paper products.

  • a piece of cardboard

  • a square of toilet paper

  • a disposable cleaning wipe (optional)

  • a plastic container with a lid

  • water.

Hands-on activity

Test each material

  • Place 1 piece of the paper material in the container with water.

  • Close the lid tightly.

  • Shake the container for 1 minute and place it on the bench.

  • Open the container and look inside.


Use the table to record your observations.

Hint! There is an example table to show you how you might record your observations in your workbook.


  • What do you notice?

  • Was there a change to the paper material?

  • Did the paper material stay the same?

  • Are materials still useful when they are wet?
