Classification
The 110-year-old Snub-nosed monkeys ate a group of old-world monkeys, they are a beautiful golden mammal part of the Cercopithecidae family Despite being around for just over a century, currently, there are around 3,000 of them left in the wild. Due to habitat loss, the Rhinopithecus has been declared Worlds most endangered primate species.
Diet
Living on mainly plant foods, the snub-nosed monkeys are diurnal herbivores. They feed on trees, shrubs, vines, insects, a d their personal preference, lichens. As they host more, the monkeys are known to have a habit to launch themselves on dead trees as they host many delicious lichens.
Habitat
Snub-nosed monkeys can be found in mountainous temperate forests with an evergreen conifer and deciduous broadleaf trees. As for the climate, the temperatures they enjoy range from being below freezing in winter to Summer when it can be up to 25 degrees Celsius. They can be found in areas like Western Central China, Sichuan, Gansu, Hubei and Shaanxi.
Appearance
Just by looking at it, you can notice that the beautiful golden colour on their coat eventually brightens and becomes more visible throughout their life. The monkey has a row of small, shark teeth inside their mouths. Their weight can be between 6.5-39kg and their length can be between 57-76cm.
Behaviour
The snub-nosed monkeys use a seasonal formation and split their groups at random times. Typically in the winter, they form units of 20-70. Once a male is fully grown, they grow long guard hairs. They live in groups of 500 and seem shy around humans.
Lifespan/Reproduction
The monkeys tend to live from the ages of 20-25 years. While it seems weird, dominant males mate with several femals at time, normally from September to November as those months are mating season.
Conclusion
All this information must be overwhelming but did you know that humans are known to be the snub-nosed monkey's largest current predator? The temperate forests in China have served the monkeys well for centuries and it is thought it will hopefully serve for centuries more.
