The axolotl is an amphibious salamander. The scientific name is "Ambystoma mexicanum" its common name is Axolotl. The word "axolotl" comes from the Nahuatl language of the Aztecs, and means "water dog".
When the axolotl is fully grown they can weigh up to 300 grams. the axolotl can measure up to 30 centimetres and 48 millimetres. Axolotl colours are white, black, gold, speckles and fluorescence. What makes them unique is their feathery gills on the sides of their heads.
The axolotl is a carnivore. It can chase prey at 16 kilometres per hours. Axolotls will eat worms, insects and small fish. Axolotls will eat anything they can fit inside their mouth and swallow whole.
The axolotl is only native to Mexico. You can find axolotls only in 2 lakes. lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco. Axolotls only live in freshwater. They also live in the canals and water ways of Mexico City.
Axolotls can live for 5-10 years in the wild, 10 - 15 in captivity and 15 - 20 if well cared. The Axolotl do a courtship dance. the female axolotl can give birth to 300 eggs all the way up to 1000 eggs depending on the size. The axolotl has five stages in its life, not including death. Stage 1 is the embryo, which measures about 2 mm in diameter and also surrounding layers of jelly. Stage 2 is the embryo right before it hatches, still surround by jelly Stage 3 is very young larva before it has any limbs. Stage for like other salamanders and unlike other frogs the front leg come first and the back leg develop second. At stage 5 the axolotl is a miniature adult.
Did you know that axolotls are 100 times more resistant to cancer than humans. They can also regrow the same limb 5 times. the axolotl is registered as critically endangered.
