The axolotl is a lentic animal, meaning it only inhabits in still water lakes. It is apart of the amphibian and salamander family. The axolotl's scientific name is Ambystoma Mexicanum. Axolotl's can weigh up to 300 grams and live up to 20 years if well cared for.
Frequently, the axolotl eats worms, insects, crustaceans, molluscs, small species of fish and really anything else they can fit in their mouth and swallow whole. They eat 2 times a day and eat food mostly that they can find in their habitat. When hunting, axolotls bury themselves into the aquatic vegetation to not be found by predators but then at night they become hungry and violent while attacking prey.
Surprisingly, axolotls can be many different colours and shades, these include. White, black, gold speckles, fluorescence and have silvery highlits on their skin. An axolotls gills can be different shades of red or pink. Axolotls can reach up to 45 cm but the average size is 22 cm long. They have round dark eyes with yellow iridescent, meaning it looks prismatic, also axolotls move up to 15 kmph at fastest.
Interestingly, the axolotl is only found in Mexico. There are only 2 lakes where the axolotl is found: Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco. Both of the lakes that the axolotls live in are freshwater lakes. They also live in the canals and waterways of Mexico City. Axolotls spend their whole life underwater, they also require 40L of freshwater to survive.
Although the axolotl is critically endangered, females can lay up to 1000 eggs. The life cycle of an axolotl starts where the female lays eggs and the male deposits spermatophores, more known as sperm packets, on the lake floor. Then the female picks up the sperm with her cloaca, a body cavity, which then fertilizes her eggs. Then it takes 6 months to reach full maturity, in those 6 months, one hatched, axolotls remain in a jelly like substance, then they grow their head and body before entering the larva stage. Baby axolotls are see through, and hey dont grow legs until 2 weeks into the larva stage. They stay in this stage until they reach sexual maturity and are able to breed.
Axolotls are solitary animals, meaning they like to be alone most of their dya. They are also nocturnal, meaning they are primarily active at night. During the day, axolotls burrow themselves under the aquatic vegetation , they are very aggresive towards one another, they bite off each others gills, feet and tails. Axolotls enjoy hiding in sea plants and rocks, as far down in the water as possible
Despite the fact that axolotls can regrow any organ or limb in their body up to 5 times, they are still critically endangered. Axolotls are 1000 times more resistant to cancer than any other mammal in the world! The axolotl is the Aztec god of fire and lightning, Xolotl, wich disguised himself as a salamander to avoid being sacrificed.
