The Japanese Spider Crab also known as the Taka - ashi - gani in Japanese doesn't swim but walks along the sea floor scavenging for food. Their scientific name is the same as their species name which is Macrocheira kaemeferi. They are classified as an artipods and they are known for being the largest artipods animals with no backbone, external skeletons and multi jointed appendages. It's claws can also cause many injuries.
Surprisingly the japanese spider crab's habitat is a little small, it includes the sea floor along Japan's pacific coast. Mainly they can be found primarily on the sandy and rocky continental shelf and slope. As they grow into adults they migrate into shallower waters about 160 feet (50 meters) deep. Generally they can also be found off the japanese island of Honshu and from tokyo bay to Kagoshima Prefecture.
The Japanese Spider Crab's diet is really they mostly eat dead and declaring matter across the sea bed/floor. They can also eat fish, invertebrate and algae. How you ask well they catch and tear apart the meat with their powerful pincers.
Interestingly the japanese spider crab doesn't actually swim they scavenge along the seafloor looking for their prey. To move they pivort over the heel and pull those toes down to shift forward. Surprisingly they move slowly but their long legs allow them to stalk their prey.
It may not be commonly known the japanese spider crab are not aggressive to humans but they are poisonous to their prey, but harmless to humans though. Unfortunately little is known about their behavior because they live so deep, but apparently they are not sociable animals.
The japanese spider crab has two stages (three including an adult) these two stages are, stage one zoeal larvae moults in 9 - 12 days after hatching. the second stage the zoeal larvae moults in 12 - 14 days after stage one entering the megalope stage. The lifespan of the japanese spider crab is 50 - 100 years.
The predators of the Japanese spider crabs are large fish, stingrays, octopuses and humans. It also has eight long claws/legs like a spider, they are known to be gentle giants. Did you know that they are also decorator crabs!
