Creative freedom; be bold!
Allow for enough space/padding around the quote. Minimum is 10pt.
When using call outs and labels, make sure there is enough color contrast between elements, and that padding around each element allows for enough breathable space. In call outs, pay attention to where the lines overlap on images and that they don't cover up anything important.
Spacing between headers are already predefined in the paragraph styles, however in some instances there may be a need to adjust spacing to acommodate sections of content or graphic elements. Please use this as a guide.
Overall continuity in design helps learners know what to expect and how to find information easily, as they only have to get used to one structure and can then focus on the content. Keep text location consistent from page to page and use similar formatting. If you use bullets, use them the same every time. Always place headings and subheadings in the same place. This will allow for maximum readability, as inconsistency can confuse learners.
Whenever possible, left-align copy with other copy, even when it’s in a container element. This creates a strong vertical alignment with the text, adding in legibility, organization and clarity for a user.
Leading is predefined in our paragraph styles, however if content needs to fit on a page, please adjust to what fits best while maintaining decent spacing.
Always look for opportunities to improve rags.
Watch out for orphans and widows.
Use "shift + return" to adjust orphans, rags, or widows.
If adjusting spacing or leading does not work, collaborate with a content creator to solve awkward breaks that can affect reading quality.
Allows for breathability in the typography. This prevents text from going edge to edge in a container, and helps the reader.
Readable text allows users to efficiently take in textual information. Text that is not readable makes it challenging for them to stay focused. The following guidelines promote good readability.
Always create live text in the InDesign file, never use an image of text.
Do not use ALL CAPS, use sentence structure.
Readability is reduced with all caps because all words have a uniform rectangular shape, meaning readers can't identify words by their shape.
Always look for opportunities to create improved rags, or ragged edges on the right margin. Watch out for orphans and widows and adjust line lengths to create a more pleasing block of text.
Maintain at least 7pt padding around text.
Only use italics when necessary (titles of works, technical/scientific terms, ship names, foreign words).
Only underline hyperlinks.
