TIMING

Proper care should be taken to ensure that animations are paced along with the spoken content. The objective of using animations is to guide the learner through the learning points and enhance understanding. It's important to make sure the pacing of the animation is slow enough to comprehend yet still aligns with what is being said. Our animations should be easy to interpret and add to the experience rather than detract or overwhelm. Everything is related to timing. it can make or break all the elements in the animation.

General best practices

As a general rule of thumb start and end each video on the faculty unless content dictates otherwise.
Rough timing suggestions are supplied by the ID and/or Illustrator in the Artboard Collab Doc. Ultimately it is the Motion Designer’s responsibility to determine the correct timing based on a variety of factors related to the Faculty Member's on-screen presentation. These factors may contain but are not limited to inflection, pauses, verbal cues, etc.

Intros/outros
Individual elements are generally brought on screen through scale or position at a rate of 30 frames. Additional time may be required for multifaceted elements. Use plugin “Ease and Wizz” set to “Expo in & out, Curvaceous”. It is the responsibility of the Motion Designer to determine if this is appropriate for any given situation and adjust as needed.

Screen Transitions
Use the frame transitions that are built into the "Screen Position Null" layer of the sample Export Comps found in the Course Template AE project file.

Transitions from 1/4 to 2/3 to full screen and back are typically used when the faculty expands on the content being displayed in the 1/4 screen.

Artboard Transitions
When possible don't stay full frame on an artboard animation when there isn't active motion for a prolonged period of time. Alternatives include pulling back to faculty 1/3 screen and reducing the scale of the artboard to fit in the animation window. Or go back to faculty and then bring back the art board when the faculty refers back to it. Your best judgement should be used to ensure optimal learning of the content.

Back-to-Back Artboard Transitions
When switching to new artboards, avoid transitioning from an animation view - back to faculty - then immediately back to an animation view. This can be distracting. Instead, stay in an animation view - adjusting to the appropriate position for the new animations if needed - while removing previous animations.

If there is an brief pause between animation points, use best judgement on what is least distracting or makes most educational sense.
