What is the Vietnam war?
Vietnam War, (1954–75), a protracted conflict that pitted the communist government of North vietnam and its allies in South Vietnam, known as the viet cong, against the government of South Vietnam and its principal ally, the united state. Called the “American War” in Vietnam (or, in full, the “War Against the Americans to Save the Nation”), the war was also part of a larger regional conflict (see Indochina wars) and a manifetation of the cold war between the United States and the soviet union and their respective allies.
French rule ended, vietnam divided. The vietnamese people resented colonial rule, especially because of exploitation, harsh control and lack of independence, resistance grew especially led by nationalist and movement, after world was II, HO Chi Minh declared vietnams independence in 1945, but france tried to regain control, the war ended the battle of diien bien phu in 1954 where french were defeated .
The diem regime, the diem was a catholic nationalist in a mostly buddhist country stong anti-communist and was supported by the us because he opened north vietnams communist government, the diem ruled south vietnam but was corrupt and unpopular leading to resistance, the viet cong were communist fighters in the south who tried to overthrow diems government with help from north vietnam, this clash was a big part of what made the vietnam war so intense and difficult.
Timeline of the Vietnam war
December 1961 white paper was a report that said the viet cong were growing stronger , the vietnam government was struggling to control the country. The conflict was seen as communist aggression. It is marked as a major tuning point where the us increased its commitment in vietnam, this was the first big step that eventually led to full u,s military involvement later in the 1960s
The national liberation front were are group i southern vietnam, many people called them the viet cong, they fought to over thrown the south vietnam under communism. They used guerrilla warfare small surprises attacks rather than big battles, they worked with north vietnam who gave them weapons, supplies and support.
Military coup happened in 1963, the south vietnamese military officers overthrew and killed their president, this happened because of some reasons, they loss the support of the us, military frustration and unpopular government, during the coup the southern vietnamese generals launched a surprise attack on diems palace who was the president
Reasons for the us involvement in the Vietnam
Reasons one ,vietnamese independence, before wwii vietnam had been part of the french empire during wwii it had been invaded by japan. Peace was discussed at geneva in 1954 agreed that the french would leave vietnam and the country would be split among the 17th parallel until elections could be held.
Reason two, the vietminh wanted to unite the country under communist leader Ho chi minh. Many of the south vietnamese people supported Ho chi as the were unhappy with ngo Ding. War broke out between the North and South. From 1958 onwards, the South came under increasing attacks from communists in South Vietnam itself. They were called the National Liberation Front (NLF).
Reason three the USA was afraid that communism would spread to South Vietnam and then the rest of Asia. It decided to send money, supplies and military advisers to help the South Vietnamese Government.
Reason four the diem was a corrupt leader who refused to give peasants land. He did not like Buddhism and treated the mainly Buddhist population badly. As a result, much of South Vietnam’s population was rebelling against him. The peasants wanted communism and supported the Vietminh and the NLF.
Reason five On 2nd August 1964, North Vietnamese boats attacked a US Navy destroyer, the USS Maddox, patrolling in the Gulf of Tonkin.Another attack on the Maddox was reported to have taken place on 4th August. Weather conditions were poor and there was doubt as to whether a real attack had taken place. However in
A soldiers story 50 years later from the Vietnam war
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – At just 20 years old, Ron Fisher found himself on his way to a war zone.
“It still brings flashbacks, even as we’re talking now,” Fisher, now 77, said. “When I got over there, I kind of came to grips with the fact that I might never make it back.”
Fisher was drafted into the Vietnam War in 1968. He served in the Army Infantry Unit for over two years, which he said were some of the hardest of his life.

“My first day there, we were on the way to the company in this two-and-a-half-ton truck,” Fisher recounted. “And I’m sitting in the back bouncing along, and all of a sudden I hear this woosh sound. I looked down, and there was a crossbow arrow in the bed of the truck.”
That story, Fisher said, is just one of many. After being promoted to sergeant, he and his fellow soldiers often found themselves under attack.
“There was this hill covered in foliage, and the Viet Cong would go on that hill and lob mortars into the site, trying to knock out communications,” Fisher said. “I’m not complaining because there are a whole lot of people who had it worse than me. I lost a lot of friends. There were a lot of people who had difficulties.”
One of those difficulties didn’t come on the battlefield.
How the Vietnam war ended
US redrawal: The US had already signed the paris peace accords in 1973 and pulled out most of its troops. After that fighting continued between north and south vietnam.
North vietnamese invasion: in 1975, north vietnamese forces launched a major offensive, south vietnamese military couldn't hold them back, cities like Hue and Da Nang quickly fell to the communities.
Fall of saigon: north vietnamese troops entered saigon, the South vietnamise government surrendered unconditionally, the US evacuated its last citizens and south vietnamese allies by helicopter from the US embassy in a dramatic and chaotic scene.
aftermath : vietnam was unified as the socialist republic of vietnam under communist rule, saigon was renamed Ho chi Minh City, thousands of south vietnamese fled the country.
