The separation of powers has an enormous effects on the United States government system and the lives of US citizens. It has both benefited and harmed the lives of US citizens through its unique way of management. Its system has several flaws that are detrimental to the purpose of the separation of powers. However the separation of powers is what supported the rise of the United States and has led to it to be the current best country in the world. So overall it is still a good system that is beneficial when applied to any form of people.
The separation of powers referred to dividing the powers of the government into separate branches to limit any of them having excessive power over the other (NCSL, 2025). It was jointly decided upon and set in stone by the founding fathers. They wrote in the constitution the powers and limitations of each branch of government and its role. The Legislative branch is responsible for making laws. While the executive branch is responsible for enforcing laws that were made. On the other hand the judicial branch was responsible for interpreting laws. The three branches worked together to form a united government and there were power checks in place where each branch had some power over the other two.
There were many benefits and disadvantages of the separation of powers. It ensured that no single entity became too powerful with each branch of government having some power over the other (UOLLB, 2024). It also prevented any abuse of power with how each branch has a restraint on the other two. In addition it allowed for a stable and predictable government that won’t have any major fast changes in its policies which will allow its citizens to have time to adapt. However there is a potential of a difference in opinions of the three branches which results in no decisions made. Another thing is that there is a lack of coordination of the government. Also it takes too long to make a major change or decision that can benefit the people. Other than that the judicial branch is given a huge power in their ability to revise laws for constitutionality (Aithor, 2024). Which can result in an imbalance of powers with the judicial branch having too much power with how much it can affect the lives of citizens with its power over the law.
Other than the mentioned above there are a few fundamental logical problems of the separation of powers. If one political party has a lot of members in different branches it will form a strong central power with nobody restraining their own members. Thus as long as there was a leader in a certain branch it could lead to it gaining too much power. Like how Trump has strengthened the executive branch with his influence on the Republican party managing to bypass the restrictions set in place on a certain power. Which managed to weaken the Judicial system and result in an imbalance of powers creating a situation where it didn’t fulfill the purpose it was created for. He has also passed a lot of executive orders that were controversial for overstepping bounds. There is a general consensus that his executive orders are broadening the power of the presidency but not all agree that oversteps constitutional bounds currently (Campbell, 2025). Though there is still opposition to the Trump administration by the American Constitution Society his policies have clearly disregarded the separation of powers (ACS, 2025). With him overstepping his bounds there hasn't been an exercise of suppression by the other two branches because of his political party being in charge of all three branches. Proving the fact that the system is flawed with how it doesn't limit such actions that violates the separation of powers' purpose.
In conclusion the separations of powers/ checks and balances are really important to the United States government with how it affects the daily lives of citizens. After weighing the pros and cons the benefits it gives to the citizens outweigh the harms it bring. Its flaws in system regulation could also be fixed with certain laws put in place to restrict certain things. So in general this is a system that should continue on developing and further aid in enhancing mankind.
