Every word on the Constitution was precisely written to ensure the people’s belief in Order, Rights, Unity, Justice, and Liberty. It represents the people’s rights, freedom, and trust placed on the government. The Constitutional Convention aimed to take the best parts of different types of government, and implement it into their own government. In the process of making their government, the writers wanted to ensure trust and safety in their citizens. One of the ways they did this was through amendments. The first 10 amendments were named the Bill of Rights, which includes the rights of each citizen in the United States. Constant alterations and remodeling of the Constitution by adding more amendments was a way to create a utopia of a Government. But this “utopia” consisted of segregation, injustice, and discrimination, which led to The Civil War. The Civil War was an important war in which 3 new amendments were created soon after it ended. These were the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. Also known as the Reconstruction Amendments, ratified in 1865, 1868, and 1870.
Racism in the United States has been a recurring problem that many throughout the country faced. Partial or severe racism began once the first slaves were brought to the U.S. to do the labor of wealthy individuals, who could afford to feed and shelter them. The rich and nutrient filled soil in the south allowed for efficient and excess growth of cotton. The southerners started to buy slaves, feed them, and shelter them, knowing the work they put in would pay for the owner’s needs and wants. This cruel and unselfish act grew in popularity amongst the white southerners community, and soon, african americans were being pulled from every part of the south, and even from other countries to do exhausting work dawn to dusk. Abraham Lincoln had enough of this injustice, and preached his Gettysburg address, which reached the entire country, and declared war on the south. This war was known as the Civil War.
The Civil War was a dispute which tore the Nation, Northern states wanted to abolish slavery, while southern states wanted to sustain slavery. Southerners used slaves to do manual work for free, which increased the cotton production, and reduced the spending of money to pay the workers. The fast and efficient collecting of cotton done by the slaves led to their increased demand. After years of fighting, the North won, and soon after, the Constitution had a new Amendment which abolished slavery in all the Nation.
The abolition of slavery was established in the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and was favored by the North and hated by the South. After slavery ended, former slaves were not citizens, nor immigrants because they were brought to the U.S. by force. Therefore, the 14th amendment was created to give citizenship to all born or naturalized in the U.S. Soon after the 14th amendment was added onto the Constitution, the 15th was too. The 15th Amendment gave all African American men the right to vote. These rights enabled the African American community to get real jobs, buy homes, and be treated the same as other white families.
The abolishment of slavery steered the country into the greater good. This amendment helped the market and productivity of citizens to boom, and thus exponentially increased the GDP and overall stability of the country. It was recorded the capital stock GDP grew by over 100% after the 13th amendment passed. Labor and productivity of citizens were booming, and funding to the government was rapidly rising. This led to common grounds and cities being constructed and furnished to increase the city population, increase the labor percentage and GDP of the nation. After the 14th and 15th amendment passed, it allowed for African Americans to express and portray their opinions on the government by becoming citizens and voting for their leaders. With newly constructed cities and job opportunities, there was an influx of immigration into the country, which overall helped the country develop and grow as a whole.
The creation of these three Amendments after the Civil War played a significant role in justifying the rights of all citizens in the U.S. By giving the African Americans these rights, it allowed them to vote for their leaders and gave them more opportunities to get jobs and enjoy them. These Amendments were created to make everyone equal, and by giving everyone the same opportunities as people of different races. African Americans gained many more chances to prove to other races, and provide for their family in ways they were never able to before. One thing that African Americans didn’t earn is respect. They didn’t get the respect of their white peers, their boss, or people in public. The present day legacy of the Reconstruction Amendments allowed for everyone to be treated equally, and after decades of its ratification, some people and places still choose to disobey and treat people differently based on their tone. To this day, the stereotype of African Americans is negative, but by thinking in different perspectives and point of views, this can change.
