The art room is a peaceful, creative space. Middle school research informs us the brain struggles to process both frenetic and creative energy simultaneously. The art room must remain a place for creative expression. Voices level zero. Soft music will be playing. The lights will be low, allowing natural light to filter in through the skylights and windows.
If this environment is not what you anticipated, either adjust your expectations or see your counselor for reassignment in the first 5 days of school. Each of my classes are filled to maximum seating capacity, with a waiting list. You have elected to be here, please respect your choice.
Come to class prepared
Each class period you must have:

On Fridays Only: 🎧Your headphones
Artists will wait to be invited into the art room, this ensures your safety. Students are expected to stand in a silent line against the display cases.
Students will enter the art room silently with a creative, peaceful mindset.
Read your daily supply list from the orange box on the board. Collect these supplies and head to your seat.
Bring a pencil and water bottle but leave any food in your backpack.
Store your backpack in the Backpack Parking Lot.
Sit in your assigned seat.
I record grades on the seating chart before transferring them into PowerSchool.
In order to receive your grades, you must be in your assigned seat.
🙋
Raise your hand if you have questions or need something. Classrooms supplies are only available per designated activity.
Everyone helps everyone clean up.
No one leaves the room until all art supplies are accounted for, returned to their proper place and tables are washed; if necessary.
Your work is either stored on the drying rack or in your table folder.
Your table folder is returned to your class portfolio, under the red star, behind my desk.
Students stay in their seats until class is dismissed.
Chairs are pushed under the tables.
Leave the room the same way you entered; peacefully.
As a middle school student, it is your responsibility to turn in any graded assignment. We will have due dates for each grade. You will be assessed on these dates based on your progression of work, work quality and fidelity to assignment goals. Check your PowerSchool often. If you miss a grade, it will show as a zero.
3 points-Sketchbook Challenges | Grade based on artistic fidelity for the posted assignment
5 points-Skills Check-Ins |Applied skills grade, either in preparation for a final project or a checkpoint for the project
10 points-Final grades for Projects | Recorded as a test grade in PowerSchool, this is the final assessment for a major project
Late Work Policy | All work must be turned in by the due date assigned. Late work will be graded per the GMS Grading Policy regarding missing/late work.
👈 There are three ways to earn grades in this Art class.
Each piece of your art MUST have three items on the back:
Your name
Your class code
Your table color, circled
📒 Sketchbook Challenge Days
The state of North Carolina and Durham Public Schools provide mandated standards for Visual Arts... but there’s a whole lot of other amazing art concepts. That’s where Sketchbook Challenges come in. On these days, the last day of the week, drawing assignments will be posted in Canvas. Students must come prepared with your charged DPS provided computer and your own headphones. This is an opportunity to experience concepts like optical illusions, anime or to refine specific skill techniques in a new way.
School Policies are Art Policies
This classroom follows all Durham Public Schools & Githens Middle School policies and expectations. There are no exceptions.
On Being Absent
1 or 2 class periods | Your project will be here waiting for you. Upon return, check with your tablemates for missing steps.
3 or more class periods missed-check Canvas. Under the tab Work from Home. Here you will find several art options to do from home. Choose one for each 3 days missed, complete the Google form, also in that tab, and you can continue your class artwork when you return.
Late work policy for art is the same as for Githens. All major projects are due when the grading period ends, either mid-semester or at semester’s end. This option is only exercised for absences and for students working diligently on their projects, but require additional time.
If I am out and you have a sub, whether it is another fine arts teacher (because we had to collapse) or an actual substitute teacher for the day, your assignment will be posted in Canvas, under the tab, Sub Work. This is a 10-point graded assignment. Why 10 points? Because being a sub is tough work. I want you to continue to make good art and work on your art work with fidelity.
Your artwork for that day will be posted under Announcements in Canvas, start there. If for some reason we have no power/internet, we will follow the administration’s decision on school assignments.
