Hello y hola! I cannot tell you how exhilarating it is to be in the diverse and progressive school community of Sherwood Githens Middle.
I am Ms. Lisa Turco, your Visual Arts educator.
Originally from Michigan where I was raised by parents who were both educators and artist. I grew to appreciate the value of the Arts, as well as understand the correlation between the study of art and the continued pursuit of knowledge.
After earning a BS in Elementary and Middle School Education, I went on to receive a MAT in Administration and Consulting. Since then I have become a National Board Certified Teacher in Early and Middle Childhood Visual Arts. All said, I hold teaching certifications in 7 areas of study, including Spanish. Additionally I have professionally been in education/Art education/community Arts for 41 years.

When I’m not at school, I can be found running on a trail, doing yoga and participating in community events in my beloved Carrboro. My two adult children, their partners and pets keep me busy. Family time always includes grilling out, where the kids don’t let me cook…story to follow. My camera roll is filled with art, as inspiration is found everywhere!

To me, art isn’t about pretty things to hang in the hallway. An artist knows how to problem solve, collaborate, synthesize information. An artist communicates, relates and celebrates the diversity that makes us human.
