New school year, new opportunities! The Fine Arts Department is excited to welcome back new and returning students back for the 2026/2027 school year. Please take a moment to explore this site. The Fine Arts Department wishes to send a fond farewell to two fantastic educators!
Ms. Turco has served as Art Teacher at Githens Middle for almost ten years. Throughout her career, Ms. Turco talk both elementary and middle school Art, Spanish, and Reading. She made deep bonds with students who vied every year to continue taking her classes. As a colleague, anyone could count on Ms. Turco to be there if asked. In the spring of 2026, Ms. Turco will be retiring from education. We wish her well in her next chapter and look forward to seeing her around. Thank you Ms. Turco for your dedicated years of service and friendship!
Mrs. Knight has served as our fearless Choral Director since 2024. New to teaching, Mrs. Knight tackled things head on and built a fantastic Choral Program here at Githens. Mrs. Knight helped students find confidence to express themselves through song and community. Students experienced adventures on the stage at Jordan High School, in the North Carolina All County Chorus competitions, and various community performances. We are sad to see her go, but excited for her new adventures! Come back and see us any time Mrs. Knight!

The Githens Fine Arts Department showcased the visual and performing arts talents of students across grade lelevels. This year's event featured our new Jazz Band & Glee Club! 7th & 8th grade Orchestra students performed a piece inspried by the sea, while work created by Visual Arts students was on display around the auditorium.

Fine Arts Spring Concert, Wednesday | May 21. Come see the Performing Arts classes (Chorus, Orchestra, Band, & Dance) perform! Artwork from the Visual Arts classes will also be on display. Concert starts at 6pm.

Mark your calendars and get excited! On the evening of March 26th Githens Middle School will hold its annual Multicultural Night! The event features student artwork and projects showcasing their studies of the various countries represented by our student body here at GMS.
The Fine Arts Hallway will feature student works representing the Southeast Asian countries of:
Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

Evening to Shine 2025!
On February 11th, 14 Choral students representing GMS will participate in Durham Public Schools' Evening to Shine 2025. Our wonderful singers come from all three grade levels. Come out and to hear their beautiful voices!
Evening to Shine is a district productions which features the talent of students across Durham County. The event takes place at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Come out to see the Githens Band Winter Concert at Jordan High School! The Fine Arts Team is excited to showcase the instrumental talents of our 7th & 8th Grade students. Entry is Free and the concert runs from 6:30pm - 7:30pm. See you there!
