The aim behind the celebration of this day is to commemorate the people who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident of Bhopal Gas Tragedy that occurred on this day in the year 1984. Considered as the world’s worst industrial disaster, Bhopal Gas Tragedy occurred after a highly toxic methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas made its way into and around the area situated near the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal.

‘Vijay Diwas’ celebrates the fearless determination and valour of our Armed Forces. The entire nation salutes the brave martyrs of 1971 war between India and Pakistan.
Each year, ‘Vijay Diwas' is celebrated to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 Indo-Pak War. It was the day that the Chief of the Pakistani forces, along with 93,000 troops, surrendered unconditionally before the Indian Forces. This historic incident paved way for the creation of Bangladesh. The war took place as the government had decided to go against Pakistan to save Bengali Muslims and Hindus .
The war lasted for merely 13 days and is considered to be one of the shortest and the most violent wars of the 20th century. The war effectively came to an end after the Eastern Command of the Pakistani military signed the Instrument Of surrender on 16th December,1971 which was the biggest surrender after World War II.
The day is also observed to remember the unsung heroes who laid down their lives. Rich tributes are paid to the martyrs of the India-Pakistan war of 1971.
