Some songbirds and owls like to build their nests inside of hollowed out areas in trees called cavities (or holes). These cavities are often made by woodpeckers or other animals and are usually in short supply, especially in younger forests and ini suburban areas like the ISK campus. Building bird houses gives these native bird species (and sometimes other animals like small mammals, bats, insects... a place to call home. Go ahead and make one of your own and place it somewhere on the ISK Campus or in your own backyard. Different species of birds prefer different sized boxes, with different sized holes. Start with some research into what types of birds (or mammals?) you want to live in your box and design and build it to match these requirements. Let these images inspire you.
