Weekly/Unit Class Updates:

1st and 2nd Grade:

In the 1/2 class, we will begin the year reading Charlotte's Web together.  Students will be creating a lapbook based around some of the elements of a story as we introduce those concepts: characters, setting, and theme.  They will leave these here as we work and then bring them home when we finish the unit in November. 

9/23 and 9/24: We plan to read chapters 10-12 in class.  Students do not have a personal copy, but there are many audio versions online if your student was absent and you'd like for them to stay caught up.  

3rd and 4th Grade:

In the 3/4 class, we will begin the year with the Classic Starts version of The Story of King Arthur and His Knights.  We will review all of the elements of a story, including plot, setting, and theme, but will focus primarily on characters as we study the idea of characterization.  Students will create a brochure based on the characters and their development.

9/23 and 9/24: Students added to their character brochures and began listening to an audio version to help with the homework load this week.  

5th and 6th Grade:

In the 5/6 class, students will begin the year reading The Door in the Wall by Marguerite De Angeli.  We will identify elements of a story (plot, setting, character, and theme) as we read, and we will focus on the how and why behind annotating a text.  

9/23 and 9/24: Students wrapped up their reading of The Door in the Wall with a Reading Log and  class discussion.  They recevied their copes of The Children's Homer along with a pronunciation guide for characters and a vocabulary list for part 1. 

7th and 8th Grade:
In the 7/8 class, students will begin the year reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. We will read and analyze the text through the lens of the author's life as well as that of a modern-day reader.  Students will practice engaging in large and small group class discussion as they learn to recognize Twain's trademark style, learn the how and why of annotating a text, and practice asking and answering good questions.  

9/23 and 9/24: Students looked for statements about human nature in last week's reading and used these to form level three questions.  They also added discussion questions from each chapter (20-27) to their list of questions from the novel.
