Class Unit Updates:
In the 1/2 class, we will begin the year reading Charlotte's Web together. Students will be creating a lapbook based around some of the elements of a story as we introduce those concepts: characters, setting, and theme. They will leave these here as we work and then bring them home when we finish the unit in November.
In the 3/4 class, we will begin the year with the Classic Starts version of The Story of King Arthur and his Knights. We will review all of the elements of a story, including plot, setting, and theme, but will focus primarily on characters as we study the idea of characterization. Students will create a brochure based on the characters and their development.
In the 5/6 class, students will begin the year reading The Door in the Wall by Marguerite De Angeli. We will identify elements of a story (plot, setting, character, and theme) as we read, and we will focus on the how and why behind annotating a text.
In the 7/8 class, students will begin the year reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. We will read and analyze the text through the lens of the author's life as well as that of a modern-day reader. Students will practice engaging in large and small group class discussion as they learn to recognize Twain's trademark style, learn the how and why of annotating a text, and practice asking and answering good questions.
Welcome to Mrs. Grant's Literature Class at AHE!
Our goal in this class is to engage with literature as a way to understand the human experience. My hope is that students will develop a love of literature as we discuss our virtues and how they relate to the works studied, learn to recognize and appreciate literary devices, and learn to ask thoughtful questions.
