'Welcome to the 'Department of Zoology'

Established in the year 1954, the Department of Zoology, Deshbandhu College, is one of the oldest departments in the University of Delhi with a glorious academic past and imparting deep knowledge on various aspects of animal life till date. The backbone of the Department are the highly qualified and dedicated faculty members who have diverse teaching and research interest in the field of Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, Immunology, Entomology, Fish Biology, Ecology, Animal Diversity, Genetics, to name a few. The Department boosts to offer B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology, B.Sc. (Prog.) Life Sciences and General Elective disciplines to students of other courses. The state of the art lecture theatre and well- equipped laboratories contribute to excellence in teaching and learning, further supported by the departmental museum and library, containing large collection of specimens, microscopic slides and books, respectively.

The Department takes pride, to be at the forefront of academic research with three research laboratories, highest number of research laboratories in any department of Deshbandhu College where research fellows can register for Ph.D. programs. These research laboratories also provide an opportunity to enroll for post-doctoral research, summer internship and various short term research trainings.

The Department believes in all-round development of its students and encourages them to participate in both academic and extracurricular activities. A vast array of academic activities like “Colloquium” – a weekly series of guest lectures by eminent scientists, and various scientific conclaves like conferences, symposia are conducted frequently. The students are also taken to reputed research laboratories, field trips, excursion tours for practical learning outside the four walls of their labs and classroom. The regular organization of International/National conferences, symposia and various community awareness programmes of repute are key features of the Department. The Zoological Society of the Department organizes vibrant annual festival “Chimaera”, an inter-college event for the students. The Department also inculcates scientific temper among students by DBT star college projects, Biodiversity club activities, nature walks etc. Committed to growth and welfare of its students, the Department is organizing various webinars, E-symposium, online workshops and have recently initiated Alumni e-Talk series- “Reconnect”, in view of the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic crisis and resulting suspension of regular classroom teaching.
