Prof. Kamal Kumar Gupta, Principal Sir gave heartwarming welcome speech emphasizing the importance of alcohol awareness as alcohol use is typically established during adolescence and this can have negative effects on one's short- and long-term health as well as social outcomes. Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Convenor introduced our distinguished speaker, Dr. Avtar Singh Meena from Department of Biotechnology, AIIMS.

The topic of his talk was “Role of calcium channel in alcohol-induced tissue injury”. He gave his invaluable time towards creating the awareness about different  aspects of alcohol use disorders (AUD) prevailing in society among the students. He  raised awareness about the most prone age group towards alcoholism, that is, 13 to 14 years, where underage drinking leads to severe health issues. More than 2.6 lakh deaths are due to alcoholic cancers out of which 1.4 lakh dies due to liver cirrhosis. Alcohol sales contribute to two percent of GDP of India but leads to loss of 1.5% of it due to health treatment of diseases caused by alcoholism. Several measures are being taken on this issue such as drink and drive fines, drinking age limit, seizing of fake IDs, camps promoting withdrawal of alcoholism etc.

An interactive questionnaire was held between the student audience and speakers. They asked various questions and queries that were well answered by the speaker. He raised awareness about the issue talking about common myths among the population such as "little alcoholic consumption is good for health and lifestyle" in India.

A poster-making competition was also organized on 4th December, 2023 as a part of the “alcohol awareness” with the theme- Alcohol abuse harms: tissues, health, family and society. Students participated enthusiastically in the event and embraced the opportunity to share their message via their art, focusing on the importance of alcohol awareness. After the interactive session post-talk, there was declaration of the winners from poster making competition. The session ended with the heartiest vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Mohd. Shazad, Co-convenor, followed by the national anthem. Mr. Arun Chhokar was also the Co-convenor.

After getting to know these dramatic adverse effects of alcohol, students learnt that    we as a society should be taking conscious steps to eliminate this unnecessary leech  from existence and make our society a peaceful and heavenly place to live in for everyone. Overall it was a great interactive session where all students interacted with  our distinguished speaker and cleared a lot of doubts and misconceptions regarding alcohol consumption.
