Zoological Society

The department has a ‘Zoological Society’ which provides a platform to the students to hone and showcase their leadership skills. The society organizes its well-known annual festival “CHIMAERA”, an inter-college event where students from various prestigious institutions compete in cultural and technical competitions. The department also encourages and supports students to participate in various inter-college and inter-university competitions. Dr. B.P. Saxena, a fish biologist started the ‘Zoological Society’ of the department.

Chimaera has been functioning over the years with the aim to inculcate scientific culture and team spirit among the students.

The Department of Zoology of Deshbandhu College, celebrated its Annual Departmental Fest “Chimera” with great gusto and delight on the 26th and 27th of February 2021.

The two day event was organised and assembled by the Zoological Society, under the guidance of staff advisors- Dr. Ranjana Seth and Ms. Pavitra Sharma. The event was graced by the enthusiastic participation of the students, non-teaching staff and the teaching faculty of the Zoology Department. Merriment and exuberance veiled the festival, although being in the middle of an ongoing pandemic.  As a part of the fest, several competitions were hosted by the conveners, co-conveners and teacher conveners of the department across the online platform.

The first day of the fest included the Chimera Making Competition, where the participants were asked to create/ draw a chimera consisting of given sets of organisms and subsequently submit their creations within a 2 hour time frame. The competition was judged by Dr. Ranjana Saxena and Dr. Neerja Sood from Dyal Singh College, Dr. Anju Jain from Daulat Ram College and Dr. Monica Misra from Acharya Narendra Dev College.

The final day of Chimera had several competitions lined up. The event began with an address note by the President of the society followed by the Talent Hunt Competition where the video footages of the participants’ recorded acts were exhibited and shown to the audience. The acts were judged thereafter. The judges included Dr. Tenzin N Bhutia from Gargi College, Dr. Jyotsna Singh and Dr. Neha Niharika from Daulat Ram College and Mr. Rajkumar from S.N. Sinha College, Magadh University.

This was followed by the Quiz Competition involving two rounds of questionnaires with the first round conducted through google forms and the second on the google meet platform as a pop quiz.

The concluding event of the fest was the Treasure Hunt Competition comprising of several rounds of unscrambling scientific names of organisms, crosswords and zoological riddles.

Declaration of results of the various competitions by the respective judges consummated the entire event with a formal vote of thanks to the organising committee and all the participants and attendees of the fest.

CR Ist year - Zoological Society Chimaera had its inaugural function under the aegis of IQAC and DBT Star College on October 4, 2019. The theme for the inaugural function of Chimaera 2019-20 was Glorified reptiles: The Birds. From amazing birds to their diversity in India, and from migration of birds to threats faced by them, the lecture series were delivered by Dr Asad Rahmani, a great ornithologist and Ex Director Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). There were various events organized in the inaugural function alongside the lecture such as – the Biodiversity Quiz and the Photo exhibition which provided the students of the college as well as of the other colleges a platform for showcasing their talents.

Inaugural event of Chimaera 

On 1st May  2020 we organized a Creative Writing Content on theme "the Covid-19 pandemic" organised by Team Chimaera was very successful. More than 80 students of both PG and UG actively participated in it.  Event was judge by Dr. Manisha Sengar from Department of Zoology and Dr. Roshni from Department of Botany. Idea of the event is led by Teacher-in-charge Dr. Varsha Baweja Department of Zoology and supported by Dr. Gouri Nandy as staff advisor.
