Since its founding in 1954, the Department of Zoology has earned a reputation among various departments at Deshbandhu College and University of Delhi. Apart from excellent teaching learning, the highly qualified faculty members have also excelled in research publications and book writing. The Department is proud to have dedicated faculty who have received several awards and recognitions both at the national as well as international forums. We have three well equipped research laboratories for doctoral research projects. Our transformative learning experiences, in and out of the classroom, are designed to train students who have continued higher studies and research in prestigious institutions like NCBS, NII, ACBR, FRI, IISc, AIIMS, DU etc and in Universities abroad. The basic discipline, training and support that the students have acquired here, has also enabled them to successfully diversify into Healthcare services, conservation of Wild life & Environment, IAS, IFS, defense personnel, MBA and Film industry etc.
Pillars of the Department : Our Forebears
The Department of Zoology has a galaxy of senior teachers who by their academic excellence, hard-work, sincerity and commitment have taken to its current position and reputation amongst the Zoology departments of various Delhi University colleges.
Our torch bearers Shri PM Kaul, Shri DS Garia and Dr. PA Shiromani besides being excellent teachers were capable administrators too.
Dr. BP Saxena joined the department in 1960 and served the college till 2002. He is remembered for his emaculate teaching style and was instrumental in forming the “Biological Society” to promote student activities.
Dr. (Mrs) Kanta Sharma, a meticulous teacher who taught, encouraged and motivated the students to achieve newer heights from 1974 - 2003.
Dr. ML Gupta, with specialization in Entomology was appointed in 1974 and also served as the Vice Principal of the college from 2010 – 2011 before his retirement in 2011.
Dr. (Mrs) R Shymala a dedicated, communicative and empathetic teacher taught for more than 40 years. She also served as the college Bursar and then Vice Principal of the college before her retirement in 2014.
Dr. Devinder Singh a conscientious teacher served the college from 1977 - 2016 and also as the Election Officer for DUSU elections.
Dr. (Mrs) Veena G Bhat, a committed and a very popular teacher served the college from 1976 - 2013. She was associated with various departmental and college activities.
Dr. Ravi Kant, an Endocrinologist, joined the department in 1982 and served the college till 2018. He was engaged in many departmental and college administrative activities like Election Officer for DUSU elections.
Dr. (Mrs) Ranjana Seth, a cell biologist, joined the department in 1991 and served the college till 2021. She always engrossed with college and departmental activities. She was very active in research and guiding the research scholars.
We owe a folded hand gratitude to our forebears who not only contributed to laying the foundation of this department but also contributed a lot in the administrative activities of the college. Now the department has 16 faculty members who are motivated to keep a trend of higher academic excellence and put their consistent efforts in fulfilling the big dreams seen by the forebears.
