The Okhla Bird Sanctuary is located at the banks of river Yamuna in Gautam Budh Nagar Utter Pradesh (28.552 N, 77.319 E) with an area of approximately 4 square Kilometers. It was notified as Sanctuary in the year 1990; at present, it is one of the 466 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in India. The Sanctuary has a beautiful landscape and serene environment with diverse flora and fauna. It provides shelter and breeding ground to a variety of migratory birds in winters. It also houses a number of resident bird species.

The group walked on nature trail for about 4 KM. They reported more than 55 species of both the migratory and resident birds and captured them in their camara. Flocks of the migratory birds such as coot, gull, different species of cormorants, little grebe, shoveler, pochard, flamingo and many more were seen in the Yamuna canal. Many resident birds like jungle babler, tailor bird, king fisher, rufous treepie, ashy prinia, Oriental white-eye, Oriental magpie robin, yellow footed green pigeon etc. were spotted in the surrounding vegetation. The sounds of many birds were identified with the help of mentor and online apps. The group also reported various other animal groups such as Daphnia, Moina, Copepods, Snails, Catfishes, Squirrel and different types of Insects. This visit to the sanctuary was not only a great learning experience but also a great relief from the emotional stress of Covid 19 to the students.
