Workshops

2023

Nothing exists except atoms and space; everything else is opinion” --- Democritus

Department of Zoology, Deshbandhu College, University of Delhi organized a workshop on “Visualizing the Invisible – Ball and Stick Model” to get a hands-on knowledge of molecular structures of biomolecules such as amino acids, carbohydrates, and other biomolecules. The workshop was organized under the guidance of respected Principal Sir, Prof. Kamal Kumar Gupta, and teacher-in-charge Dr. Moses N. Rinchui. It was attended by around 80 participants that include students, research scholars, and faculties of our as well as various other colleges of the University of Delhi such as Kirori Mal College, SGBT Khalsa College, Miranda House, Dyal Singh College, and Sri Aurobindo College. Dr. Sandhya Rai, Dr. Jaya Malhotra, and Dr. Moses N. Rinchui were the conveners.

Dr. Priti Jain, Assistant Professor, Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University (DPSRU), was the Resource Person for the workshop. She gave phenomenal lectures and hands-on training instructions on various structures of different biomolecules. The workshop comprised a series of interactive sessions, demonstrations and practical exercises. She enlightened us about enantiomers, stereoisomerism as well as other chemical aspects of biomolecules and how they are associated with several diseases. She continued to describe whether D-enantiomers of amino acids are a boon or bane.

The workshop successfully demonstrated the applications of Ball and Stick models in different scientific fields and highlighted their significance in drug discovery as well as molecular research. Overall, the workshop received positive feedback from the participants, who expressed satisfaction with the content, organization and delivery of the sessions. The event proved to be a valuable learning experience for all attendees, equipping them with knowledge and skills that can be applied in their respective fields of study or work.

Capacity Building Workshop

22-24 December, 2021

To strengthen and upgrade the technical skills of the non-teaching staff members of life science laboratories, the department of Biochemistry, Botany and Zoology, Deshbandhu College, University of Delhi, jointly organized a three-day Capacity Building Workshop on Basic Laboratory Techniques and Lab Ethics from 22 to 24 December, 2021.

The workshop was organized under the aegis of DBT STAR college scheme and IQAC, Deshbandhu College. In order to provide hands-on training on various important practical aspects of life science courses, different modules were prepared and compiled in the form of a laboratory manual.

The areas which were focused in the hand-on training in the workshop were cleaning and maintenance of glassware, weighing and preparation of solutions, working of pH meter, laboratory safety and lab ethics, use of microscope and its maintenance, preparation of temporary and permanent slides, preparation of different types of stains and good laboratory practices, working of ultra-violet and visible spectrophotometer, laminar air flow, autoclave, preparation of solid and liquid culture media and agarose gel electrophoresis.

Around 60 registered participants participated from Deshbandhu college and other colleges of Delhi University. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Sunil Kayesth, and convened by Dr. Kamana Singh, Dr. Manisha Sengar and Dr. Aparna Nautiyal. The faculty members of all three departments actively participated as either resource person or as mentor or both. The workshop was guided and supported by Prof. Kamal Kr. Gupta, Vice Principal and Prof. Rajiv Aggarwal, Principal, Deshbandhu College.
