In HS Studio Art, students progress through 4 different units (two per Semester), practicing and demonstrating understanding through 8 materials-based Assignments total. While exploring conceptual approaches to creative thinking, students develop material disciplines and work through the lens of the Elements and Principles of Art and Design.
Semester 1: Students will have an understanding of: the Design Process, Graphic Design, Digital and Physical Collage, Gesture Drawing, Portraiture, Ceramics, Building and Model-Making, Principles of Design and Color Theory.
*Students are evaluated throughout this course by means of our unit assignment rubrics. Learning for understanding is also demonstrated throughout the studio art-making process, both in class and through our weekly Checkpoints.
August 19th- October 25th, 2024
Unit Description:
CDS Artists get a first hand look at what the beginning of any design process looks, specifially in Unit 1, regarding the industry of Industrial Design. Students are the designers trying to target a particular customer base with their creative narrative of their brand, translated through color, imagery and digital means. Effective and accurate research techniques are acquired as they scour the latest trends in their chosen “field”. A Product is developed, and a Mood Board and slide presentation are presented to their peers.
For their second project for Unit 1, CDS Artists will then transition into the psychological representation of sensory, hybrid portraiture. Through mythological and historical research, and through the means of a traditional "Power Portrait", students transport themselves back in time to another historical society in history.
*Artworks from this Unit will be presented at CDS' annual HS Winter Art Show this year!
October 25th- January 24th, 2025
Unit Description:
A deepened understanding of the literal and figurative view of “perspective”, CDS Architects will learn what it means to view materiality and interpretation from different points of view.
Students will reimagine a crumpled piece of paper into an architectural form inspired by a famous architect of choice (i.e. Frank Gehry, Antonio Gaudi, etc.). Drawing from observation will be learned as a means for understanding value and form, and then these charcoal drawings will then be used to inform the planning and foam board sculpture of their final building.
January 24th- April 15th, 2025
Unit Description:
CDS Artists familiarize themselves with a deeper understanding of what it means to be a working Artist. Students learn what it entails to curate and exhibit finished work, as well as to sell it. With a self developed Essential Question (or EQ) as their guide, students express creative freedom to express an "answer" to their EQ through two art pieces. Students choose the medium(s) that deem the most suitable to communicate their idea and to execute their vision.
*Artworks from this Unit will be presented, and available for bidding at CDS' annual Silent Art Auction in April! All proceeds go to FSI: Freedom Speakers International!
In addition to the Visual Arts Learning Standards, students are guided in their practice via Harvard's Project Zero Studio Thinking Project, and the eight Studio Habits of Mind.
