Addiction

What is addiction?

Addiction is when you want to keep doing something so much that you start to lose control over how often you do it. If you're addicted to something it can start to feel like it's taking over your life. People can be addicted to lots of different things not just smoking, drugs or alcohol. People can feel addicted to their phones, exercise etc.

If you choose to take illegal drugs, please remember it can lead to a criminal conviction which could end up affecting your future. And if you're under 18, it's against the law to buy (or try to buy) alcohol.

That said, if you're worried at all about addiction (you or someone you know) it can really help to talk to someone you trust. That could be a friend, parent, teacher or GP.

Alateen

Alateen is for teenage relatives and friends of alcoholics. Alateen is part of Al-Anon.

We believe alcoholism is a family disease that affects everyone in the family. Alateen meetings are for 12-17 year olds. They meet to share their experiences of having, or having had, a problem drinker in their lives. They help and support each other.
