Accessory digestive organ
Has endocrine function and exocrine functions
Makes insulin, glucagon and digestive enzymes
Pancreatic islets make and secrete:
Glucagon from alpha cells
Insulin from beta cells
Both are hormones and act in the endocrine system
Secretory acini secrete:
Trypsinogen(precursor to trypsin which breaks down protein)
Amylase: breaks down sugars
Lipase: breaks down lipids
Ductal cells secrete:
Sodium bicarbonate(NaHCO3)
Empties into duodenum via duodenal papilla
Major duodenal papilla: opening of pancreatic duct
Minor duodenal papilla: opening of the accessory pancreatic duct
Main pancreatic duct: duct of Wirsung
Accessory pancreatic duct: duct of Santorini
Ampulla of Vater: opening formed by union of bile duct and pancreatic duct
Sphincter of Oddi: junction at the bile duct, pancreatic duct and duodenum
An enzyme that breaks down sugars
Glucagon and insulin
