Most routine discipline issues can and should be handled within the classroom using positive behavior support strategies. It is permissible for teachers to team with each other to provide for "time away" or "time out" in each other's classrooms when necessary. If such arrangements are made, they should not exceed 30 - 45 minutes and the teacher must provide appropriate tasks, materials and directions. The use of "time away" or "time out" is intended to provide students with a means to regain composure. Please reference this sheet when calling the Main Office for BMT support.
All exclusionary techniques must be monitored, logged and continually evaluated in terms of effectiveness in modifying the identified behavior. Time-out should be the last technique used in the behavior management hierarchy after other less intrusive methods have been attempted and proved themselves to be ineffective (and documented). Positive behavior support strategies are always the preferred methods to be used in addressing student behavior, and our SEL (social and emotional learning) initiatives must always be the first steps taken and followed in order to teach students appropriate behaviors. If these strategies are not gaining the desired results, refer the student to the Student Services PLC [SSPLC] or consult with your grade level Compliance Facilitator. The student may need to have a Functional Behavior Assessment [FBA] followed by the creation of a Behavior Intervention Plan [BIP] which is attached to that student’s current IEP.
