Credit Failure Options
Students who fail courses needed for graduation and promotion have the option of CREDIT RECOVERY or
GRADE SUPPRESSION to receive credit for the course. Please see below for a detailed description of both options.
Credit Recovery
Description: A shortened version of a failed course (Grade 59 or below) to recover credit only.
Recovered course is taken for a Pass/Fail (P/F) grade only and not factored into the student’s GPA.
Recovered course grade does not replace the failed course grade.
Recovered courses will not be accepted by the NCAA Division I or II core standards.
Recovered courses may be re-evaluated for admissions by colleges/universities.
Grade Replacement (Suppression)
Description: Repeats an entire course that has been failed (Grade 59 or below).
The initial course must have been taken in Fall 2015 or after.
The repeated course shall replace the most recent course failed on the transcript.
Credit toward graduation is only earned once, regardless of the number of times the course is repeated.
A student repeating a course for credit must take an associated End-of-Course assessment for the course. An exception to this rule applies for students who have already scored at Level 3, 4 or 5 on the associated EOC assessment.
If the course has an associated EOC, the higher of the two exam grades will be used in the calculation of the final grade. (A-GRR/R).
If the repeated course is failed, both courses, each with the grade of F, remain on the transcript and are calculated in the grade point average (GPA).
Which Option is Best for You?
Grade Replacement
Student would like to replace a failed course grade on their high school transcript.
Student would like to improve their cumulative GPA.
Student needs an improved GPA for CMS Athletic Eligibility.
Student is considering participation in NCAA Division I or II sports.
Athletes who need to recover a course will need to retake the course as "new" coursework instead of credit recovery in order to suppress the previous F and for the numeric grade to be factored into the GPA (for athletic eligibility purposes). Since the NCAA will not accept a P/F grade, the student must take the whole course ("new") for grade suppression.
Credit Recovery
Student needs course credit to be promoted to the next grade level.
If the failed course is the prerequisite for a course that fulfills a graduation requirement, and that required course is taught on the A/B schedule.
