‘La Dolce Vita’ - Year 9

Italian Music, Film, Food and Travel

This Year 9 Italian Elective exposes students to a variety of media, which allows them to immerse themselves in the Italian language and culture.

Taking inspiration from Eurovision and the San Remo Music Festivals, students will participate in their own ‘Cheltevision Music Festival’. Through inquiry-driven learning, students will explore contemporary issues through classic and current films prior to attending the Italian Film Festival. Students will also create their own Italian recipe books and YouTube cooking videos, which will culminate in a class food festival. Finally, students will access authentic online resources to develop an ideal itinerary of their dream destinations in Italy. Students will further develop their language skills through key grammar and vocabulary, which are linked to these themes.

The assessment tasks are designed to develop students’ communication skills. They enable ongoing feedback to students to encourage language interaction, using a variety of resources including oral, visual and ICT.

Pathways and Opportunities

Where possible, incursions and excursions will be offered. These may include the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition at Melbourne University and Lygon Street excursion, the Italian Film Festival excursion and the Italian Week incursion.

Year 9 Italian students may apply for the biennial CSC ‘Italian Study Tour’ and travel to Italy, to put their language skills into action and experience the Italian language and culture firsthand.

Year 9 Italian students who successfully complete Semester 1 and Semester 2 Italian, will be eligible to enrol in Year 10 Italian. Italian is a sequential study and is a prerequisite for VCE Italian.
