Theatre Studies

Theatre Studies at VCE level aims to expose students to a wide range of theatrical styles, from the pre-modern to the modern era. Students are exposed to a variety of script excerpts, theatrical styles and theatre technologies. The course scaffolds students from the exploration and acquisition of both performance skills (acting) and design skills (lighting, set design, costume and makeup, stage management) to the interpretation and realisation of a full play for performance. Theatre Studies is an excellent opportunity to formulate and follow through on an artistic vision. Over the course of four units, students will also gain skills in critical self-reflection, and develop the ability to view and critically assess professional productions.

The ultimate goal of Theatre Studies is to give students a sense of ownership and voice of an artistic vision and a fully supported space in which challenges can be set, striven for and overcome, a space where the academic and practical can exist as equally important and a sense of accomplishment can be achieved. Above all, the most exciting feature of theatre studies is the option to choose to present a design interpretation in Unit 4 as opposed to a performance piece. A truly exciting opportunity.
