Using the Internet
Learning Objectives:
Discuss issues of copyright and downloading material e.g. mp3s, images, videos etc. Find images which are creative common licensed and understand the importance of stating their sources.
Activities:
Start the lesson by giving questions
1. What does the word "creator" mean?
2. Point out to students that they are all creators. Ask: Think about a time you created something, when you wrote down an idea, took a picture or video of something, made a piece of art, or uploaded something you made to the internet. What was it? Invite students to share out.
3. Ask: What about a time when you've used someone else's creation online, like an image or a quote from an article? Invite students to share out.
Explain that when we create something, it's automatically ours. We have protections in place to make sure others don't use our work and say it's theirs. This protection is called copyright.
4. What is copyright?
5. What are some examples of copyrights?
6. Why is copyright law important?

Learning Objectives:
Modify searches further to find relevant information for a report.
Activities:
Help students focus on what they know about the Internet, and how (and how often) the Internet factors into their lives.
Activity 1 - Mind-map Write the word “INTERNET” on the GSlide and draw a circle around it.
- Prompt students for words/phrases that come to mind when they think about the Internet. Write a few on the board branching off of the circle.
- Once the mind-map is complete, have a discussion about the words/phrases on the board. Review the words with the class (pronunciation, meaning, etc), and eventually come up with a working definition of what the Internet is.
Activity 2: Give the questions: What do you do on the Internet? Give 3 examples. Make a list of all the reasons students gave for using the Internet. Discuss the answers.

Ask students to draw table to classify information that they need. For example: name of place, hotel for them to stay, the website of the hotel, what are the telephone numbers, price of the each rooms etc.
After students find the information they’re looking for, have discussion; was it difficult? What was difficult/complicated? (Try to get to the idea that there is a lot of information on the Internet, and searching can be complicated as a result. However, if you know what they’re looking at/for, the clues in the search can help them find what they need).

Learning Objectives:
Be aware that web sites are not always accurate and that information should be checked before it is used.

> When was the articles uploaded?
> Does the site you're evaluating give credit to an author?
> If no responsible author is listed, is there an indication of any sponsorship?
> Are they experts on the topic they are writing about?

Tell students that anyone can publish on the Web. They don't have to know what they're talking about.
At the end of the lesson tell students that information that is outdated may be incorrect or incomplete. A well maintained Web site will generally tell us at the bottom of the initial screen when it was last updated and maybe even when it was originally created and made available on the Web.
Always compare the information that you find on a Web site with other information sources. Generally, you wouldn't want to use only Web sites as support for a research paper, so you would be looking at other types of sources such as books, magazine articles, etc. as well.
