Mixon/Brooks

School Name: New Sullivan Elementary

Grades: Pre-K - 8th

Teaching Team: Ms. Sherry Mixon & Ms. Shenequa Brooks

Big Idea: Weather, Play, Sound (the weather impacts our senses in different ways when playing our physical activity)

Inquiry Question: How does the sound of the student's favorite season (the weather) compare to the sound of the student's favorite physical activity?

Pre-K - 2nd graders practicing their performance with basketballs.

Story behind Project

Ms. Mixon and Ms. Shenequa thought about how the weather can impact the way the student's play sports. They thought it would be a great idea for the students to focus on one of their favorite physical activity such as running, basketball, soccer, jump rope, hula hoop, and hopscotch to name a few with their favorite time of the year (which doesn't have to relate). Then they had to focus on the sound that comes from their physical activity and compare it to the sound of the weather that occurs during their favorite season. It allowed the students to slow down and focus on one of the five senses, (hearing).

Ms. Mixon put together a mini choreography for the Pre-K through 2nd graders using the basketballs. The performance speaks to the ending of summer to the beginning of fall. The weather referenced is heavy rain and thunderstorms which the students enjoyed hearing. The students were tapping the ball lightly with their hands, stomping their feet, and dribbling the ball to mimic the sound of thunderstorms. They had a lot of fun doing that with one another.

Patterns

All the students will be collaborating on this project and the final will be a video of them coming together and performing their perspective on the inquiry question.

The 6-8th graders designed a pattern that visually portrayed a story of the sound their physical activity makes in comparison to the sound of the weather that takes place during their favorite season. Below you see the examples of what the students did. Barakat enjoy playing jumprope in the Spring time. Pariana favorite season is winter and she feels that sound of snow and wind blowing is calming. Toni's favorite physical activity is basketball and season is spring. She feels that the booming and loud sound the basketball makes when she dribbles it is similar to a thunderstorm in the spring time. Nilah enjoys playing soccer in the summertime. The clear skies, sun shining in the summer, and the kicking of the soccer ball to her is calming.

The 6-8th graders digital patterns were designed using Pixel Art and printed on cotton fabric through Spoonflower.

Performances

The students collaborated with one another and created their own content around what they wanted to share with the viewer. They spent time in their groups mapping out their videos from who was introducing who, the props they wanted to perform in, and share their thoughts about the comparison of the sound of their favorite season and favorite physical activity. Listen to what they came up with below.
