Art & Movement

Big Idea: Art & Movement

Inquiry Question: How can students use art making to move their bodies?

Project Story: Ms. Shenequa collaborates with Ms. Walls ( the Physical Education teacher) and they were interested in the students learning how to incorporate visual arts with P.E. Ms. Shenequa was thinking a lot about movement and ways to incorporate visual arts with 1st and 2nd graders. It was difficult because they were working with small kids with very short attention span, but it was a lot of fun to see how the students engaged with the different activities Ms. Walls and Ms. Shenequa planned. Learning to strike with an implement to learning how to eat healthy foods, the students created, moved their bodies, and had fun!

Striking with Implement

Ms. Walls taught the student striking with implements. The students were given paper plates (their implement) or they could use a notebook. Then they would use a balloon or paper ball (their object) and do various exercises to see how the striking of the implement impacts the object.  Ms. Shenequa had the students decorate their implements (paper plate examples below).

Pathways

Ms. Walls taught the students about what a Pathway was and how they can use their locomotor skills such as hopping, skipping, walking, running, and sliding to do several pathways. Ms. Shenequa instructed the students to create their own pathway using the various locomotor skills.

TWISTER MATS 🎨

Ms. Shenequa had students decorate their mats and they used to play twister. The students chose a number 1-6 and a color from red, green, yellow, or blue. Which ever number and color they chose they were given a cardio exercises to do for 30 seconds.

Nutrition

Ms. Walls taught the students about nutrition and what healthy food looks like versus junk food. The students learned how to make their plate and watched exercise videos choosing the healthy food versus junk food. Ms. Shenequa instructed the students to draw and color in one food item from the 5 nutritional groups: grains, dairy, meat, vegetables, and fruit, they learned on their plate. Also, the students were able to design their own food person.

SuperHero Food

Ms. Walls taught the students about nutrition and Ms. Shenequa wanted the students to create their own super hero's who gained their powers by eating healthy foods. See what the students created below.

Juggling

Ms. Walls taught the students different ways to juggle using grocery bags. Ms. Shenequa had the students decorate one out of the three grocery bags they will use to juggle with. See the students example below.
