Show & Tell

Big Idea: Show & Tell

Inquiry Question: What does the students create and how do they share it with their classmates?

Project Story: Ms. Shenequa and Ms. Lewis (computer lab teacher) was interested in integrating more hands on projects and exercises for the students to work on. It started off with implementing animation quality exercises that evolved into more of what the students wanted and enjoyed doing more. So it became a Show & Tell format where Ms. Shenequa will introduce different Contemporary Artists, directional drawing exercises inspired by the artists, music and art exercises, and more that varied day to day.

Academic Standards/SEL:

Embody the Art 🖼

Ms. Shenequa had the students observe one of Kerry James Marshall's art piece and they had to imitate it the best way they see fit. It is a fun and engaging project for the students to think out of the box and interpret the way they look at things around them. See what a couple of students came up with below.

Build Up ⬆️

The students did a scavenger hunt finding objects in their home based on the color asked of them. After they had to put together a sculpture using the objects they put aside. See what they came up with below.

Super Hero 🦸‍♀️ 🦸‍♂️

Who is your superhero? The students were asked this question and they could draw anything or anyone. See what they came up below.

Blind Contour Drawing ✍️

The students observed three objects and drew the objects without looking at the paper. See what they came up below.

Directional ✍️  Game

The students took a turn in describing an object, person, or place and described it to everyone without giving away the answer. While everyone began drawing what the guess is Ms. Shenequa timed everyone between 30 seconds to 3 minutes. See what they came up with below. There were moment where the students did some cool surprise drawings along the way.

The students learned about Jean-Michel Basquiat an American artist who was successful in the 80's. He was regarded and one of the most influential artists in the 20th century (definitely  way ahead of his time). He was known for his large scale paintings which spoke about racism, classism, and economic status in his community and what he was grappling with in our society. The students did a Basquiat's dinosaur guided drawing with a crown (his signature). 👑

The students learned about artist Derrick Adams who works in painting, installation, collage work, and mix-media. We went behind his studio in Brooklyn, NY. His work centers around the idea of Black Joy and he paints African-American men and women highlighting the idea of joy, rest, chill, and celebrating memorable experiences. The students created their own floaters for the pool for the summer.

The students learned about contemporary Jamaican-born artist Ebony G. Patterson. We watched her traveling solo exhibition ...while the dew is still on the roses... Ms. Shenequa had the students think about what a garden and death means to them for Ebony uses the idea of garden and death in this specific work. The students created their own gardens. 🪴

The students learned about Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist based in Tokyo, Japan. She is 92 years old and is known to be the princess of polka dots. She does sculptural and installation works where dots takes over the space. The students did a directional activity of one of her famous pumpkin piece. 🎃
