Ms. Shenequa and Ms.Pineda

Ms. Shenequa and Ms. Pineda's after school program at New Sullivan Elementary we teach Pre-K through 5th graders. We wanted our class to be fun, hands on, expose artists to the students, and work with various materials that will allow the students to think outside the box. We welcome you to see our trajectory.

Above image are sponge paintings inspired by artist, Alma Thomas.

Roll- A - Basquiat

For this project Ms. Pineda found a worksheet that the students can do as an exercise using a die and oil pastels to do a drawing inspired by Micheal Basquiat's work. Ms. Shenequa wanted the students to continue the inspiration by making Crowns expressing their personality and self.

Memory Quilts

Ms. Shenequa shared with the students a video about Faith Ringgold and her impact in the art world. The students then created paper memory quilts about a celebratory memory they shared with family and friends.

Neighborhood Scape

The students learned about artist, Jacob Lawerence, during Black History Month and his painting of the migration during the great depression. Ms. Shenequa wanted them to do a drawing of their neighborhood or community on cardboard tiles using oil pastels, crayons, and markers.

Straw Paintings

The students learned about Argentine conceptual artist Marta Minujin. They were excited to see her large scale art pieces made out of straw, paper, and other materials. Ms. Pineda and Ms. Shenequa planned for the students to create a pattern using straws and glue. From there the students made accessories such as necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

Sponge Paintings

The students learned about African-American artist and teacher Alma Thomas. Her landscape paintings inspired the Sponge Paintings which the students used peanut packaging as a stamp tool to create images of flowers, patterns, trees, text, and more.

Winter Wonderland

Ms. Shenequa's favorite holiday is Christmas. So Ms. Pineda and Ms. Shenequa for the month of December did various projects to celebrate the holiday from snowman, snowflakes, and Christmas ornaments.

Day of the Dead

The students decorated skulls in celebration for Day of the Dead, celebrating the Mexican heritage.

Pumpkin Fall

The students learned how to make pumpkins using construction paper, pipe cleaners, and metal pins.

Spring Rolls

The students created spring themed characters using toilet rolls. They had a blast making these.

Mother's Day Bouquets

The students created a bouquet of flowers in honor of Mother's Day using craft sticks, tissue paper, pipe cleaners, jewels, and other materials they felt would add beauty to their bouquets.
