What was the Manitoba School Act?

The protection offered by they Manitoba Act did not last long. By 1890 French or Catholic schools were abolished. Removed from the act later, was the clause that Manitoba was officially bilingual. English was the only official language, once again.

Demographic Change

When the Manitoba Act came into play, there was more than 50% of the population that spoke French and were Catholic. With the migration west, that population dropped to 15%. These demographic changes were due to the government looking for Protestant, English-speaking immigrants who were interested in settling in the west.

The Métis Move West Again

After the defeat of the Métis in Batoche in 1885, many Métis people moved to Alberta, where the largest population of Métis currently live. Once arriving the new Albertans had to scrape together money in order to purchase land.

In St. Paul, many Métis people made the attempt to settle and farm in the area, however the government closed the settlement because they felt that the Métis people were not given the support necessary that the government had promised.

l'Association des Métis de l'Alberta was established to help the people who were forced to relocate due to the Manitoba Act, through lobbying the government.
