There are 3 key events that took place during Phase 5:
The HBC and NWC merged to end a conflict between the two companies that caused many fights and hostage takings.

The HBC began to lose control of its monopoly:
The British were worried the Americans would try and gain control of Rupert's Land after a lost court case between HBC and the independent Métis traders.
The trade began to decline in the west:
With over-hunting, many animals began to disappear, as well as a decrease in demand for furs by the Europeans. HBC negotiated the sale of Rupert's Land to Canada.
