After establishing farms and working the fur trade, the people of South Branch knew that challenges would arise. Canada began to demonstrate their authority
establishing the North West Mounted Police and developing the plans for the railway system to BC.
surveying the land for the government of Canada and their land grants.
This included land that had already been settled by the Métis
granting large tracts of land to a land speculator company to buy land from the owners to build the railway between Winnipeg and Edmonton. The company had control of the settlements in South Branch, as if they did not exist.
What could the Métis do?
The Métis sent petitions to but the government would not listen to the Métis or the First Nations of the west.
