Throughout the period of the war and after, many people who were in support of the British, left the Thirteen Colonies for Québec and Nova Scotia. These refugees were escaping to places that remained under British rule.

Most of these people were called Loyalists or those who had British ancestors. This included:

  • 3 000 black Loyalists

  • 2 000 Haudenosaunee people

  • 3 000 German Mennonites
