The largest of the cartilages that make up the framework of the larynx. The vocal cords (or vocal cords) have their anterior attachment to the deep surface of the thyroid cartilage. The thyroid cartilage is open posteriorly, as are all the tracheal rings, with the exception of the cricoid cartilage. The posterior margin of the thyroid cartilage has elongate, rod-like extensions both superiorly and inferiorly, which are the superior and inferior horns of the thyroid cartilage. The inferior horns of the thyroid cartilage articulate with the cricoid cartilage.
