The sternoclavicular joints are synovial double-plane joints at the upper and lateral parts of the sternum. They form the junctions between the manubrium of the sternum and the clavicles.
The sternoclavicular joints allow movement of the clavicle in the anteroposterior and vertical planes, although some rotation also occurs. No muscles act directly on these joints, but almost all movements of the shoulder girdle or the scapulae will cause some motion at these articulations.
