The axilla (armpit, underarm) is the area directly inferior to the glenohumeral joint where the arm joins the shoulder. The axilla contains many structures, including:
• Axillary a. and its branches
• Axillary v. and its tributaries
• Infraclavicular part of the brachial nerve plexus
• Five groups of axillary lymph nodes and their associated lymphatics
• Long thoracic n. and intercostobrachial n.
• Axillary fat and areolar tissue in which the other contents are embedded
