The appendix (or vermiform appendix) is a blind-ended tube connected to the cecum. The cecum is a pouch-like structure of the colon, located at the junction of the small intestine and the large intestine. While the true function of the appendix is unknown, it is speculated to play a role in mucosal immunity or in the maintenance of intestinal flora.
The term "vermiform" comes from Latin and means "worm-shaped".
