Faculty Collaborator: Liz Chen and Neil Sarkar
About:Â
Kaitlyn and Zach have been working with Dr. Liz Chen and Dr. Neil Sarkar to develop course content for their Biomedical Informatics class focused on reading and analyzing health data. They have migrated course labs from Google Docs in Julia to Jupyter Notebooks in Python. Additionally, they are creating new lab content, including tutorials on using Jupyter Notebooks and data exploration for new datasets in Python, Julia, and R.
Main Goal
Objective: To create course content that is accessible to students with different CS backgrounds.
Notes:
Start with an overview of the course and course content, focusing on analyzing health data.
Discuss the influence this experience had on thinking about inclusivity and being more effective at reaching a diverse array of learners.
Explain the materials/tools used, such as HackMD for guidebooks.
Reflect on the expectation of the project, initially thinking it would involve more data analysis but learning the importance of understanding data and teaching students how to make meaningful discoveries from it.
