Faculty Collaborator: Linda Clark
About:
For her project, Asha collaborated with Professor Clark to host an introductory Data Science workshop for students of color on campus. The workshop was a joint effort between the DSI and BCSC, aimed at encouraging more students of color to engage with Data Science, particularly the Data Science Fluency Certificate. The workshop utilized recent data from TWTP, the BCSC's orientation program for first-year students of color, and a Google Co-lab notebook to teach skills such as importing and cleaning data, exploring data through statistics and visualizations, and interpreting the data's significance. While the workshop was her primary deliverable, Asha continues to gather and communicate insights from the TWTP data to Dean Harris of the BCSC to support future programming.
Project Goals:
Host a Data Science workshop in collaboration with the BCSC.
Provide insight into recent TWTP data that the BCSC may use to improve future programming.
Deliverables:
A workshop
A findings report
Expectations:
Focus was more on people and teaching rather than a primarily technical project.
Emphasized the importance of communication in Data Science.
The Workshop: Purpose:
To interest students of color in data science and demonstrate its relevance to their communities and lives.
To encourage students of color to consider pursuing the data science certificate and understand their capability to perform the necessary work.
To create a fun environment for learning basic data science skills.
Learning Objectives:
Practice foundational skills in Python and Google Co-lab by importing data, essential modules, removing unwanted information, and modifying data.
Conduct functions such as sum and mean, and create visualizations like bar and pie charts to understand the data.
Ask questions about the data and their explorations to make meaning.
Workshop Reflections:
Satisfaction from seeing community engagement with Data Science.
Excitement in seeing students derive meaningful insights from data that could impact BCSC’s actions.
Applying learnings from the DS fellows class was challenging and rewarding.
Note: BCSC refers to the Brown Center for Students of Color, and DSI refers to the Data Science Initiative. TWTP stands for the Third World Transition Program.
