These two qualifications would be offered as an option and would result in students gaining a full GCSE in Statistics and GCSE in further Maths. There is an entry requirement for those students studying this option. Please speak to a member of the maths team for further information.
Students who are on track to receive a grade 6 or above in GCSE Maths are encouraged to consider this exciting opportunity to branch further into Mathematics and gain 2 extra Mathematics GCSEs.
In Years 9 and 10 students will focus on GCSE Statistics, covering relevant statistical techniques across a variety of real-life investigations, such as population, climate, sales etc. Students will learn statistics by following the order of the statistical enquiry cycle including:
Understanding the importance of planning
Sourcing and collecting data
Processing and presenting data
Interpreting and evaluating data
Probability
At the end of Year 10, students will be entered for their exam.
In Year 11 students will focus on GCSE Further Maths which is designed to challenge high achieving mathematicians. This course provides an insight into A Level Maths and complements GCSE Maths by encouraging higher level Maths skills including:
Algebra
Geometry
Calculus
Matrices
Trigonometry
Functions
Why study GCSE Statistics and GCSE Further Maths?
Students who choose to study Statistics and Further Maths have the opportunity to gain 2 additional GCSE qualifications within an options block.
Not only this but students who study GCSE Statistics have the opportunity to apply Maths skills to real life scenarios with a lot of overlap with GCSE Maths. This overlap supports the learning being undertaken in GCSE Maths. GCSE Statistics could also support further study in A-Level subjects including Maths, Further Maths and the Social Sciences.
Students who study GCSE Further Maths gain a more in depth understanding of problem solving in Maths and also have the opportunity to tackle advanced topics such as Calculus and Matrices before meeting this at A-Levels. Students who take Further Maths often find this positively impacts their understanding of the mathematics covered in GCSE Maths.
GCSE Statistics:
2 Papers at the end of Year 10 totalling 100%
GCSE Further Maths:
2 Papers at the end of Year 11 totalling 100%
