City and Guilds Technical Award Level 2 in Hair and Beauty
Overview
This qualification is for learners who wish to explore the exciting world of hair and beauty and the environment in which its industries operate. Students will look back in time to explore changing trends and developments within the hair and beauty sector, find out how science is used to create products and understand why we create images for business.
The science of hair and beauty includes: the structure of hair, nails and skin; ingredients in products; diseases and how to recognise and treat them; cosmetic testing; the effects of products on the hair, skin and nails; and the pH values of products.
Design in the hair and beauty sector includes the importance of using design and the factors to consider when designing images.

Assessments
This is a single option course and is split into 3 units:
Exploring the World of Hair and Beauty
Science of Hair and Beauty
Design in the Hair and Beauty sector
There is an external exam on all 3 units which you must pass to achieve a Level 2 qualification (40%)
You will complete a Synoptic Assessment which will involve you creating a historical look and using this to design promotional material (60%)

Students can go on to develop their skills further in the hair and beauty industry. If they want a career in a salon they will need to complete levels 2 and 3 in their chosen area. This course also opens doors into the world of media and cosmetic development.
