3rd/4th Class

Good morning everyone,

Only 2 and a half days left!! Summer holidays are winging their way to you. I would like to say a big WELL DONE to everyone who worked so hard online. I'm so proud of you all! I saw huge improvements in your work and in your posts and videos over the last three months. It was lovely to see you gaining confidence in your oral answers and  videos .  You made me smile every day ! I hope you all enjoyed it too. I have my last menu of work for you so pick and choose what you want to do ! Here we go;

MONDAY 22/06/2020.

Write down your five favourite things/activities we did online.

Find out the capital cities of these countries. Use your atlas to help you.1 Ireland, 2 England, 3 Scotland, 4 Wales, 5 France 6 Spain,        7Portugal,  8 Italy, 9 Netherlands, 10 Germany.

This week is Cork Walking Week so go for a walk with your family. The day should brighten up so check the weather forecast on a phone and plan it.

Play a game of "Fish in the Pond" This is a game of concentration. Get a deck of cards and place them all on the table picture facing down. Take turns picking up two cards if they match keep them. If you get a match you get to pick up another two. Watch the cards the other players are picking up as you might need them ! When all the cards are matched, count your pairs. The person with the most pairs is the winner.  Have fun!!

Tidy out your schoolbag, sort out your pencil case , throw away any markers that don't work. Pare any coloured pencils. Ask your Mom or Dad to wash your schoolbag it is probably perfect for next year. If you have copies with only a little work in them keep them for next year we'll continue on. I have nearly all your dictionaries,  Religion hardbacks, Poetry and Songs copies, art folders, etc in school . I've given some to Mrs O'Sullivan and we will give them to you in September.

Did you watch Home -School Hub? Ryan Tubridy did a whole show on the radio thanking the three teachers  on Friday and it seemed it was very popular with children. You might let me know if you enjoyed it .

MONDAY 15/06/20.

MATHS ; Mental Maths 3/4 Week 35 Monday + daily problems .

ENGLISH; Look at Seesaw and the story "Nora's Arc" You will be making predictions  along the way. You can read the story by turning down the sound . It's based in America many years ago . This reminds   me of a flood that happened here in Ireland over 20 years ago. It was in August and there was very heavy rain , so much rain that the Glen River burst its banks . One of our neighbours had cattle in the field beside the river , when the field started flooding they moved to a little hill . However the river kept rising and the cattle were surrounded by water. Eighteen cattle were washed down stream. None of them survived.  When we've been reading our stories in Word Wizard we often talk about making connections . Does this story remind you of any other story ? Hint The Bible .

BLÁTHANNA

Here are pictures of some Spring flowers , daisies, cowslips, primroses, crocuses and daffodils. Have you seen them this Spring? Cowslips are very rare now, when I was your age they used to be on every ditch and the scent off them was amazing. My budding artists could draw these in their SESE copies labeling them for Science and any other flower they spot.

A Sunday Stroll.

On Sunday Tim and I decided to go for a walk down to the bottom of our farm. He needed to look at a field to see if it was ready for ploughing. Woody and Ali were delighted , as they bounded around in front of us. When we got to the end field a large fox hopped out and ran in front of the two dogs. They chased the fox into a nearby hedge. Ali in the lead as usual!  Tim and I started heading into the next field and then over into our neighbour's farm . I called the two dogs but it was very windy and they couldn't hear my call.

Tim and I hopped over the ditch into Sean's land and walked on . After a few minutes we were joined by Ali. She is a setter and has a great sense of smell so she just followed our scent. There was no sign of Woody . Tim said "Sure he'll find his own way home !" I was doubtful. We continued on our walk looking all around at the lovely scenery at this time of year. The furse bushes are in bloom at the moment. I hate the smell of them!

After about an hour we returned home with Ali by our sides. Tim thought Woody would be waiting at the back door for us but he wasn't. I headed off down the farm again to see if I could find Woody. I walked back into the field where I last saw Woody and there sitting on a grassy hillock was my doggie!! He was so excited when he saw me he nearly fell over!! He whined and barked as if telling me  all his woes. The two of us headed up the old passage again one very happy doggie and one smiling relieved Mammy!!

Dandelions

Dandelion flowers and dandelion clocks. When you pick a dandelion flower there's white sap on the stem , this white sap is meant to be good at getting rid of warts!

Daisies

Daisies are very plentiful at this time of year. Look closely and you will see pinkish purple tips on each petal.  Many gardeners don't like them in their lawns!

Cowparsley

Cowparsley is starting to bloom on the sides of small  roads. It looks beautiful but be careful as some people are allergic to its stems. It has a very strong scent.

The Meeting On The Turret Stairs .

This is a watercolour painted by an Irish artist called William Frederick Burton in 1864  over 150 years ago. It is a painting which tells the story from an old Danish Medieval Ballad (poem or song) about Hellilil who fell in love with Hildebrand  her personal guard. He was the Prince of Engelland. However her father was furious and ordered her seven brothers to kill him. The couple had to say their goodbyes! This picture is of the last time they met . We can see from the picture that they were very sad to be saying goodbye. This picture is in The National Gallery in Dublin. If you would like to see more pictures they do virtual tours,

I wanted to show you this picture because you get to see a wonderful painting of a knight wearing his chain mail . You can see his helmet and sword too. Another reason I wanted to show it to you was its on a spiral staircase in a castle .The Normans put spiral stairs into their castles so that their enemies could only run up the stairs one at a time !

Joan Miro Artist  1893-1983

Joan Miro was a Spanish artist who was born in Barcelona.

The Garden 1925 by Joan Miro.

Here is a picture of a garden by Joan Miro. It is a colourful picture on a blue back ground. A garden is colourful and so is this picture. He uses simplistic drawings with thick black lines. His colour palette is made up of only a few colours mainly blue, green, yellow, red and of course black.

Sun Eater (middle below)

This is another one of his paintings .We see the thick black drawing again and it is childlike.

Figure and dog in front of the sun.

Miro only uses a few colours here again, red, blue, black and a hint of yellow and green

Le Coq

Here is another of his colourful paintings with bright colours.
